Industrial Coatings: Acrylics, Polyurea, Vinyl Ester, Ureathane, Epoxy, Alkyds and more…

Industrial Coatings – A quick Overview:

The industrial coatings listed below are not intended to be a complete list of all coatings, however, they do represent a large segment of Industrial Coating products.

The industrial coatings industry is an exciting field to be in with changes and advancements in all types of coatings occurring on a regular basis.

Acrylics

Also known as latex paints, acrylics are water-based and most commonly used in residential and commercial applications.

Acrylics are hands down the best for painting dry-wall.  These coatings have also come a long way with technology and are frequently used in industrial applications as topcoats for Ultra-violet protection in a high-performance coating system or situation.

Alkyds

Alkyds can be an efficient low-cost coating option for light to medium steel coating needs.

Liquid Rubber

There are several products on the market that provide an elastomeric, urethane rubber coating with great elongation properties.

These coatings are can function in a wide range of applications, including potable water situations, coatings for water cooling towers, Silos, waterproofing, and more.

Epoxy

Epoxy coatings are the industry signature industrial coating product.

One of the best primers and all around coatings, epoxies range from those that can be applied to a home owner’s garage floor, to those supplemented with coal tar and ash for tank linings of all shapes and sizes.  They have outstanding adhesion and chemical resistance, but typically do not stand up well to Ultra Violet rays and outside exposure.

Fluoropolymer

Fluoropolymers have excellent UV protection and can last for 15-20 years outside.  They have many uses, one popular example is Teflon.

Polysiloxane

Polysiloxanes can be a very effective alternative to urethane for UV protection as a topcoat, having similar characteristics, yet doing so without using isocyanates.

Pylori

Polyurea coatings are primarily used for tank linings and secondary containment.

This durable industrial coating can be applied to extremely thick with millage curing quickly.

Urethane

Urethanes also have a wide range of usage, yet their strength is to be used as a top-coat maintaining high-gloss retention – even in heavy UV exposure, with excellent chemical resistance.

Vinyl Ester

Vinyl Esters use a chemical cure via polymerization to create a thick, plastic-like coating, effective for lining tanks, trenches, secondary containment and more.

Coatings for all Industrial Projects in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Ohio

An Industrial Coating is a paint or coating defined by its protective, rather than its aesthetic properties, although it can provide both.

Coatings for all Industrial Projects in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and Ohio

The most common use of industrial coatings is for corrosion control of steel structures such as offshore platforms, bridges, and underground pipelines. Other functions include intumescent coatings for fire resistance.

The most common polymers used in industrial coatings are polyurethane, epoxy and moisture-cure urethane. Another highly common polymer used in the industrial coating is a fluoropolymer. There are many types of industrial coatings including inorganic zinc, phosphate, and Xylan and PVD coatings.

NACE International and The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) are professional organizations involved in the industrial coatings industry.

Industrial coatings are often composites of various substances. For example, Xylan dry-film lubricants are composites of fluoropolymers (typically PTFE, PFA, and FEP) and reinforcing thermoset polyimide and polyamide binder resins initially suspended in a variety of solvents (such as ethyl acetate, xylene, dimethylformamide, and N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone).

Industrial Coating Applications, Uses, and Specifics

  • Protective Coatings
  • Corrosion Control
  • Floor Coatings
  • Multi-Spec Interior Coatings
  • Exterior Texture Coating
  • Caulking and Sealants
  • Aesthetic Applications
  • Agricultural Coatings
  • Machinery Coatings
  • Corrosion Control Coatings
  • Environmental Coatings
  • Concrete Coatings
  • Metal Coating
  • Safety Coating

Industrial Coatings, Patches, Repairs and Surface Preparation for KY,TN,IN and WV

Industrial Coatings, Patches, Repairs and Surface Preparation for Commercial Painting in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio & Indiana

SURFACE PREPARATION – STEPS & METHODS  for CLEANING AND DEGREASING:

All residue – traces of oil and grease and other contaminants must be removed before grinding or shot blasting.  Grinding and shot blasting without cleaning will only push contamination deeper into the porous concrete surface. Use oil and grease emulsifiers to clean thoroughly.  Stubborn or heavy residue areas may require repeated applications.  Only then will the surface be ready for Industrial Coatings or a Commercial Painting in Indiana & Kentucky

MECHANICAL PREPARATION:

Methods such as Shot and Sand Blasting, Scarifying, Diamond Grinding, Grinding/Sanding, Key Cuts and Water Jetting and Blasting are examples of effective means of mechanical surface preparation.

Below is a brief summary of these methods with features, benefits and limitations:

Shot Blasting,  The preferred method of mechanical preparation that strips thin coatings, cleans and profiles simultaneously.  It is suitable for large and small areas, delivers high production rates, dust free, dry and cost-effective.  The excess shot must be swept-up after blasting.

Scarifying Method uses metal or carbide disks that rotate at high speeds.  Levels uneven floors and edges of concrete. Removes adhesives and thick film coatings. Dusty, very slow and labor intensive. Leaves very rough profile only fit for high build coatings.

Diamond Grinding – Diamond bits are used to grind the surface.  Leaves a very smooth profile, ideal for thin film system applications. Low dust levels. Removes epoxies and urethanes. Slower than other methods.

Grinding/Sanding Prepares, cleans and abrades existing coatings for recoat and helps smooth aggregate floors. Is slow and labor intensive.

Key Cuts Masonry saw cuts/small grooves (approx.1/4inch deep) made around drains, doors and transitions.  These serve as anchor points for the epoxy system, limit sections of failure and reduce undercutting by chemicals.

Water Jetting or Blasting – Water sprayed at extremely high pressure (5,000-40,000 psi) with enough force to profile concrete, remove laitance, contamination and unsound concrete.  No dust is generated, tight spaces can be prepared and different profiles can be achieved.  Eliminates need for harsh chemicals.  Sufficient water source must be available, time required for thorough drying.

PATCHING AND REPAIR

Settling cracks – repair after the sealer is applied and before finish coating.  Expansion joints should be repaired and filled with epoxy after the coating system is in place.  When patching apply sealer to crevice to be repaired before applying epoxy patch.   This will enhance the bond strength of the patch.   Apply epoxy / aggregate mixture immediately after mixing – spread with trowel – grind off excess.  This process should be considered before any renovation or remodeling project is initiated or completed.

Water Towers, Liquid Holding Tank Linings: Coatings, Sealants, Polymers and Paints

Water Towers, Liquid Holding Tank Linings: Coatings, Sealants, Polymers and Paints

“Avoid the wearing away of parts and equipment due to chemical reactions through the use of corrosion resistant coatings.”

The most recent studies indicate the total cost of corrosion issues in the United States alone is in excess of $276 Billion Dollars!

Corrosion is an electrochemical process in which a metal reacts with its environment to form an oxide or another compound. The cell which causes this corrosion process has three essential constituents: an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte (electrically conducting solution). The corrosion process can also be further complicated by the mixture of harmful chemicals and solvents used during various manufacturing processes.

Corrosion can be present in a process in different ways: as a primary problem in dealing with corrosive chemicals in dry or wet form, environmental conditions or as a secondary problem associated with the processing and or manufacturing of products.

Our Contractors have a wide range of coating options to help address Corrosion issues:

  • Water tower coatings and paints
  • Epoxy Floor Coatings
  • Rustoleum Polyurea
  • Metalic Floor Coatings
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating
  • Zero VOC
  • Zero HAP
  • NeverWet
  • XIM – X-I-M
  • Krud Kutter
  • Anti-Slip Floor Coatings
  • Rust Prevention and Rust Removal

These options include the application of corrosion resistance thermally sprayed metals and polymers or a combination of the two technologies.   In many instances, our coatings can address the corrosive problem while providing secondary benefits such as Release or improved surface hardness promoting erosion resistance.

FLOOR COATINGS APPLICATION, PREPARATION & HANDLING

FLOOR COATINGS APPLICATIONS

PREPARATION AND HANDLING

Many High-Performance products are two component catalyzed or unique curing systems that demand strict adherence to all technical data and guidelines.

Below is a routine checklist of sound practices and procedures:

 1) Before beginning, review all project specifications closely and read all technical data thoroughly.

2) Stage all materials before starting and double check that all the proper products, components, and quantities are on hand.

3) Make certain that all products are within the usable shelf-life dates.

4) Carefully follow all mixing instructions.

5) observe all mixing ratios, rates, and order of addition – i.e., Component B is added to Component A.

6) Provide efficient and thorough mixing of all products and allow for proper “sweat-in”or induction time.

7) Only mix enough material to be applied within the recommended working time or pot-life of the product.

8) Measure temperatures and make sure they are within allowable application ranges and note where cold or hot temperatures can slow or accelerate performance/application parameters.

9) If using thinners – only use recommended thinning agents.

10) Once the coatings are prepared make sure that the recommended application tools employed are high quality, clean and in good working condition.

APPLYING FLOOR COATING SYSTEMS METHODS:

Flooring system applications can be broadly grouped into two types; thin film (5-8 mls) and thick film (13-20 mls) systems.

Thin film applications are usually 2 coat systems; penetrating epoxy sealer/Pre-Prime and clear coats like moisture cure urethane finishes and lend themselves to brush, roll (3/8”nap max) and spray.

Thick film applications are normally 3 coat systems comprised of penetrating epoxy sealer/Pre-Prime, intermediate coat, and finish coat.

Tool requirements include brushes, squeegees and a variety of roller types; lambskin, phenolic core and porcupine.

Always refer to the technical data sheets for application recommendations for specific products and systems.

OPTIMAL 3 COAT – THICK FILM SYSTEM FIRST COAT – PENETRATING SEALER

The reaction of the epoxy sealer with the bare concrete performs a very important function of preventing “outgassing” with the subsequent topcoats.

Outgassing is a phenomenon where a liquid coating/topcoat reacts with unsealed concrete and gas is generated causing bubbles to form that become trapped in the finished film. The primer/sealer coat is poured or sprayed onto the floor and then evened out by brush, roller or squeegee.

All new or bare properly prepared concrete should receive a 100% solids epoxy Pre-Prime to provide a beginning foundation that forms a chemical bond within the concrete, satisfying the thirst and porosity of the substrate.

INTERMEDIATE AND FINISH COATS

Pour ribbons of the mixed coatings onto the floor then spread with squeegee, roller, lambswool applicator, or phenolic core roller. Lightly backroll with lint-free phenolic core roller perpendicular to the original squeegee orientation.

Avoid over rolling as it may cause appearance uniformity problems. Since many flooring systems are multilayer coats on large expansive areas, spiked shoes are routinely used by applicators so that they can walk into freshly coated areas to re-roll, even-out, lap, blend-in or broadcast aggregate or other materials into the finish while wet.

Porcupine rollers are used to smooth the surface coat and release entrapped air in the finish. Notched squeegees and rakes are used to apply high solids/ high build finishes at evenly controlled wet film thicknesses.

NON-SLIP SURFACES

Hand broadcast aggregate to recommended profile approximately 2 lbs per 100 square feet up to one hour after application.

A great industrial floor coating is the foundation of every manufacturing plant, industrial site or warehouse. The floor of any factory takes a beating, wear and tear.

Foot traffic, hand trucks and pallet movers put a lot of stress on a floor coating.

Combined with the assault from chemicals, spills and impact, the daily wear and tear on a factory floor is relentless.

A high quality industrial floor coating improves the safety of your manufacturing facility.

Standing up to this kind of punishment requires floor coatings with the highest levels of performance, durability and protection.

Plus, those floor coatings must be properly applied to get the greatest benefits from the materials.

At HPP we are your industrial floor coating experts. More years in the business and more experience than all our competitors combined.

We have years of hands-on experiences – with high performance floor coatings. Wears well and makes the factory floor look great and safer.

Plus, our clients are facility managers for industries much like yours.

A non slip solution for factory or warehouse floors must be rugged, durable and offer a high degree of slip resistance.  Safety is first and foremost.

Generally speaking, these types of floors are concrete and may have some sort of an epoxy finish.

Our Professional Industrial Coating Contractors have years of experience in providing coating solutions for many varied commercial and industrial installations.

  • Warehouses
  • Aircraft Hangars
  • Retail Showrooms
  • Restaurants
  • Commercial Kitchens
  • Manufacturing Facilities
  • Auto and Machine Shops

In 2018 we will work with you to evaluate your needs and discuss the many systems and products we have available.

We understand that a small difference in the per square foot cost between a typical epoxy floor and a modern polyurea system can become a major factor when considering the refinishing of tens of thousands of square feet, and that is why we offer multiple systems.

  • Epoxy floor coatings
  • Hybrid polyurethane topcoats
  • Polyaspartic polyurea systems
  • Densified and polished concrete
  • Slip resistant coatings
  • Solid colors, stained concrete, and simulated granite finishes

There’s a good reason why concrete is used almost exclusively for floors in basements and garages, warehouse facilities and manufacturing and food processing plants — it’s one of the few materials durable enough to stand up to the heavy traffic, abrasion, chemicals, and moisture exposure these surfaces are often subject to.

However, that doesn’t mean concrete slabs are indestructible. Left untreated without a concrete coating the porous materials that concrete is made of can succumb to extreme abuse, such as tire traffic, exposure to harsh chemicals and deicing salts, and frequent moisture contact.

These epoxies all called 100% solids because they do not have any solvents in them, and 100% of all the material stays on the floor rather than evaporating into the atmosphere. The added benefit to using 100% solid coatings is that because they contain no solvent, they have no hazardous odor and can be installed during regular production hours.

That’s where a good protective coating comes into play, giving concrete that extra layer of protection it needs to endure constant wear and tear.  In addition to its protective function, a coating can also dress up a drab surface, simplify maintenance and improve skid resistance.

As the floor wears, rough spots and potholes form, to take their toll on mobile equipment. Higher wheel replacement cost and equipment downtime become inevitable. But this doesn’t have to happen to you.

Concrete floors can have their deterioration stopped and the damage reversed.  Advances in epoxy technology have developed coatings that can protect a concrete floor and extend its life, while eliminating the dusting it had previously been producing.

The non slip solution for factory floor coating for these environments must have a very coarse texture and be able to handle a lot of friction from pallets, boxes, foot traffic, fork lifts and the like.  Factory & Warehouses Floors & Floor protection and Warehouse, protective coatings.

Protect your factory floor coating or warehouse workers from slip and fall accidents and the heavy liabilities that accompany those injuries in 2018 with HPP Industrials.
