Industrial Coatings: Acrylics, Polyurea, Vinyl Ester, Ureathane, Epoxy, Alkyds and more…

Industrial Coatings – A quick Overview:

The industrial coatings listed below are not intended to be a complete list of all coatings, however, they do represent a large segment of Industrial Coating products.

The industrial coatings industry is an exciting field to be in with changes and advancements in all types of coatings occurring on a regular basis.

Acrylics

Also known as latex paints, acrylics are water-based and most commonly used in residential and commercial applications.

Acrylics are hands down the best for painting dry-wall.  These coatings have also come a long way with technology and are frequently used in industrial applications as topcoats for Ultra-violet protection in a high-performance coating system or situation.

Alkyds

Alkyds can be an efficient low-cost coating option for light to medium steel coating needs.

Liquid Rubber

There are several products on the market that provide an elastomeric, urethane rubber coating with great elongation properties.

These coatings are can function in a wide range of applications, including potable water situations, coatings for water cooling towers, Silos, waterproofing, and more.

Epoxy

Epoxy coatings are the industry signature industrial coating product.

One of the best primers and all around coatings, epoxies range from those that can be applied to a home owner’s garage floor, to those supplemented with coal tar and ash for tank linings of all shapes and sizes.  They have outstanding adhesion and chemical resistance, but typically do not stand up well to Ultra Violet rays and outside exposure.

Fluoropolymer

Fluoropolymers have excellent UV protection and can last for 15-20 years outside.  They have many uses, one popular example is Teflon.

Polysiloxane

Polysiloxanes can be a very effective alternative to urethane for UV protection as a topcoat, having similar characteristics, yet doing so without using isocyanates.

Pylori

Polyurea coatings are primarily used for tank linings and secondary containment.

This durable industrial coating can be applied to extremely thick with millage curing quickly.

Urethane

Urethanes also have a wide range of usage, yet their strength is to be used as a top-coat maintaining high-gloss retention – even in heavy UV exposure, with excellent chemical resistance.

Vinyl Ester

Vinyl Esters use a chemical cure via polymerization to create a thick, plastic-like coating, effective for lining tanks, trenches, secondary containment and more.

“Avoid the wearing away of parts and equipment due to chemical reactions through the use of corrosion resistant coatings.”

The most recent studies indicate the total cost of corrosion issues in the United States alone is in excess of $276 Billion Dollars!

Corrosion is an electrochemical process in which a metal reacts with its environment to form an oxide or another compound. The cell which causes this corrosion process has three essential constituents: an anode, a cathode and an electrolyte (electrically conducting solution). The corrosion process can also be further complicated by the mixture of harmful chemicals and solvents used during various manufacturing processes.

Corrosion can be present in a process in different ways: as a primary problem in dealing with corrosive chemicals in dry or wet form, environmental conditions or as a secondary problem associated with the processing and or manufacturing of products.

Our Contractors have a wide range of coating options to help address Corrosion issues:

  • Water tower coatings and paints
  • Epoxy Floor Coatings
  • Rustoleum Polyurea
  • Metalic Floor Coatings
  • Polyaspartic Floor Coating
  • Zero VOC
  • Zero HAP
  • NeverWet
  • XIM – X-I-M
  • Krud Kutter
  • Anti-Slip Floor Coatings
  • Rust Prevention and Rust Removal

These options include the application of corrosion resistance thermally sprayed metals and polymers or a combination of the two technologies.   In many instances, our coatings can address the corrosive problem while providing secondary benefits such as Release or improved surface hardness promoting erosion resistance.

Industrial Coatings for Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, Machinery & Equipment Refurbishing, Renovating, Painting, Coating, Protective Sealants, Rust & Corrosion Prevention

Industrial Coatings for:

Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia and Tennessee

Machinery & Equipment Refurbishing, Renovating and Painting

Coatings, Protective Sealants, Rust & Corrosion Prevention

Today’s machinery and industrial equipment are equipped with sensitive electrical and mechanical components.  Structural Steel, Ceiling Beams, Plant & Factory Supports – Rust, Corrosion and Protection of Louisville Kentucky and Indiana.

While it’s easy to see how the appearance on a machine’s exterior is degrading, peeling or oxidizing, to prevent extremely accelerated wear and premature equipment replacements costs, it’s critical to give attention to the effects highly corrosive agents can have on the machine’s internal connections, engine compartment, and undercarriage.

Structural Steel, Ceiling Beams, Plant & Factory Supports – Rust, Corrosion and Protection can be a difficult undertaking to control, prevent and mitigate common corrosive agents from disabling and destroying equipment.  And while machines all have different jobs and operate in diverse environments, a protective coating will help shield every single one from harmful corrosive environments that cause equipment decay and breakdown, which leads to increased downtime, lost revenue and shorter machine life.

Waxes and polishes can prevent some corrosion, but they are not designed to cover every part of a machine (specifically internal) and they require regular polishing and buffing; time that mission critical equipment could be spending in the field.

The cost to coat a machine can provide a substantial return on investment. The coating materials and application are typically less than one percent of the machine cost, and new machine owners are able to capitalize the cost of coating.

A properly prepared and applied coating can provide many years of protection, generating significant cost savings in equipment maintenance and downtime.

Bottom line: by protecting your equipment today, you’ll be able to make and keep more money tomorrow.

Industrial Coatings, Different from Paint – A Contractor and Company in Louisville, KY

There’s a bit more to applying an industrial coating than just slapping it on with a brush, roller, or employing a sprayer.

Firstly, not all industrial coatings are the same. The selection of which coating will depend on several factors, primarily what type of substrate will the finish be going on. Is it steel, aluminum, wood? These are questions that should be answered and addressed before any type of coating is applied.

At Howell & Howell Contractors inc., we realize that it’s best to consult a coatings manufacturer for their advice when it comes to determining the correct product for a given application or project.  A manufacturer will have more experience with their products than anyone else.

Another thing to consider is the environment. There are factories and commercial locations where the weather conditions and physical environment, the coating will have to stand up to, are much different, due to what’s being produced at the plant or where it’s located.

Will it be a high moisture area? What about potential fumes from machinery, or chemicals? Will the surface be heating up and cooling down? Make sure that your estimator takes all of these things into consideration when speaking to your coatings manufacturer.

The last thing any industrial coating or commercial painting company in Louisville wants is to have to warranty an expensive finish because of not taking proper precautions when addressing a simple environmental issue during the initial consultation.

Surface preparation is a key factor. A lot of industrial coating or commercial painting companies fall short in this area. Very often a simple pressure washing or scraping followed by priming will not provide adequate cleaning for the new industrial finish to adhere for the long haul. A chemical wash or neutralizing agent of some sort may be necessary for a final cleaning to ensure that the newly applied finish has staying power. That’s where we go back to our product rep. After specifying a proper product you need to ensure that the preperation will be suitable for what’s going to be applied.

Different products require different solutions. Will the industrial painter you’ve hired to paint that oil storage container know this? Applying industrial finishes are not like residential interiors where it’s a straight forward painting process.
